We all love a bit of music here at Indigo Ross, even though we all have very different tastes & can never agree on a radio station/playlist!!
So as part of our 30 things for 30 years, the team are sharing the music they love & that’s important to them in a little music challenge.

Song 1:
A song from your childhood/reminds you of when you were growing up
PHIL – ‘Telegraph Road’ – Dire Straits – Dad was a fan, and the Love of Gold vinyl was on repeat for a long time!
CARL – ‘What’s the Difference’ – Dr. Dre – We use to play this on repeat back in the day through the 12” sub woofers in the back of my Fiat Punto that were worth more than the car!!
RACH – ‘Paranoid’ – Black Sabbath – It was on one of the cassettes in my Dad’s car & whenever it came on, me & my siblings use to grab the torches my Dad used for night fishing & have a mosh/rave.
MATT – ‘Baggy Trousers’ – Madness – My older brother bought “Absolutely” by Madness and it was constantly on the record player, every time I hear Baggy Trousers it takes me back right back to my childhood.
SCOTT – ‘Poison’ – Alice Cooper – Listened to all the time when growing up and got me into the music that I listen to all the time now! Finally going to see him after all these years this year too so happy days.
SAM – ‘I will always love you’ – Dolly Parton –When I was very little, I would dress up as an old lady, set up a tomb stone and lip sync to this song at my ‘husbands’ gravestone at my Nan and Grandads whilst my nan made the roast dinner.
AGE – ‘Nothing Compares to You’ – Sinead O’Connor
SOLLY – ‘Two Fingers’ – Jake Bugg
ALEX – ‘Larger than Life’ – Backstreet Boys – or Pokémon Theme Tune – if that’s allowed
LINDSAY – ‘I`m in mood for dancing’ – Nolan Sisters – / ‘Take me Home’ – John Denver – Dad used to play LP`s whilst we were eating dinner as kids.
Song 2:
What was the first single you ever brought?
PHIL – The first single I owned I think was ‘Radio Ga Ga’ by Queen 7”, bought for me by my good friend Damion for my 10th birthday! The first single I bought was ‘19′ by Paul Hardcastle on single tape!
CARL – It would of been something by the Spice Girls…probably Wannabe!
RACH – ‘Blurry’ – Puddle of Mudd – Brought with pocket money from Woolworths (probably with pick ‘n’ mix)
MATT – ‘1999’ – Prince – I bought the 7” single of this in Woolies in North St, I remember at the time thinking that 1999 seemed a million years in the future, now it seems like a lifetime ago!
SCOTT – ‘Islands in the Stream’ – Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers – Was very young and music taste wasn’t yet developed but still cant beat a cow girl and a man with a bushy beard.
SAM – ‘Crazy’– Gnarls Barkley – Don’t ask why…
AGE – ‘No Limits’ – 2 Unlimited
SOLLY – ‘Basement’ – Hard Life
ALEX – ‘Confessions’ – Usher
LINDSAY – ‘When I be Famous’ – Bros
Song 3:
What is your favourite gig you’ve ever been to? (Pick a song by that artist)
PHIL – ‘Difficult’ – ‘The Cure’ at Crystal Palace Bowl 1990 – an epic 28 track setlist! Supported by All About Eve, James and Lush….at 16 it was an eye-opener!!
But recently, Sleaford Mods at Cambridge Corn exchange – energy is incredible
‘Inbetween Days’ – The Cure – one of my mates favourite songs at the time, brings back great memories of getting up to mischief as a youngster!
CARL – ‘You need me, I don’t need you’ – Ed Sheeran – @ Wembley – (because I can recite it word for word!
RACH – ‘We Found Each other in the Dark’ – City & Colour – Really struggled with this one! Been so lucky with a lot of awesome gigs over the years, but I’ve chosen City & Colour at the Royal Albert Hall, because:
a. Dallas Green is amazingly talented (whether he’s doing his own City & Colour stuff, with Alexisonfire, or teaming up with P!nk for You+Me)
& b. His voice is just meant for places like the Royal Albert Hall – it’s hauntingly beautiful and pure goosebumps right to the soul. I always love seeing him live (6 times & counting).
MATT – ‘Transdermal Celebration’ – Ween – I saw Ween at the Shepherds Bush Empire in the late 2000’s and it remains the best gig I’ve ever been to. Hard to pick a track but settled for the stand out track from their definitive album “Quebec”
SCOTT – Metallica in Prague – ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’
I never travel abroad as planes are my kryptonite, but on one of the very few travels abroad I’ve been on it was worth it to see Metallica in Prague in 2004 play the best gig I’ve ever been to, still to this day.
SAM – UB40 last year, I went to the O2 with Ryan, his dad and brother, we got slightly (very drunk) and had the best time ever, we are going again (to Colchester) this year to see them. Favourite song from the gig was ‘Kingston Town’ (from what I can remember). Or it’s got to be ‘Take Me to Church’ by Hozier – they played at Latitude. Special as it was the first ever festival I had been too.

SOLLY – ‘You’re in Love with a Psycho’ – Kasabian
ALEX – Kanye West – ‘Flashing Lights’ or Taylor – ‘Don’t Blame’ Me or Childish Gambino – ‘Redbone’
LINDSAY – Kings of Leon – ‘Sex on fire’ / ‘Use somebody’ @ Hyde Park 2011

What is your favourite cover song?
PHIL – The Wedding Present – Come Up and See Me (make me smile) – a brilliant cover of an overplayed dreary song by Steve Harley
CARL – Pendulum, Violet Hill or James Arthur, Sexy and I Know It
RACH – ‘Beautiful Things’ – Our Last Night – One of my favourite bands & I love their post-hardcore takes on pop, rap & Disney songs (also special mentions for the brilliant & hilarious Punk Rock Factory & for Disturbed’s cover of ‘The Sound of Silence’).
MATT – All Along The Watchtower – The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Rare example of a cover bettering the original.
SCOTT – Cinnamon Girl – Type O Negative –Very deep voiced man with awesome hair and a great cover song!! Better than the original because its METAL!!
SAM – ‘Heartbeats’ – José González
AGE – ‘Heroes’ – Hollywood Vampires
SOLLY – ‘You Make Me Feel Brand New’ – Simply Red
ALEX – Miley Cyrus – ‘Zombie’
LINDSAY – Miley Cyrus – ‘Nothing Else Matters’ Metallica

A song by an All Time Favourite (can be your all time favourite song ever, or a song from your favourite band/artist or your all time favourite album…)
PHIL – Well, I played in a band (PUP) that were famous as far afield as Lowestoft…and had a fantastic few years with great friends! Whilst I couldn’t claim an all time favourite track, these years certainly formed my all time favourite musical memories!
I just can’t choose one all time favourite track or album or band or artist…..so many to choose from depending on the mood at the time! If you’re going to really push me I would say Nevermind by Nirvana. There, I said it, but ask me tomorrow and it will be different!!!! In fact its different already….Siamese Dream – Smashing Pumpkins…..no wait, Louder Than Bombs The Smiths…….The Wall – Pink Floyd……Standing on a Beach – The Cure……..NEDS Atomic Dustbin – Godfodder……Pixies – Surfa Rosa….and so it goes on and on and on and on!
CARL – Dr Dre is probably my favourite artist of all time as it reminds me of growing up, but I already have a Dr Dre banger so have opted for a great song by Paulo Nutini! – Iron Sky by Paolo Nutini
RACH – ‘One Step Closer’ – Linkin Park.
LP changed my life in 2000 when Hybrid Theory was released. They got me properly into rock music & Hybrid Theory is still my all time favourite album.
I think Chester Bennington was one of the greatest vocalists in music. Whether belting out singing, powerhouse screaming (his 17sec scream is a thing of beauty) or softly covering Adele, you could see & feel how much effort he put behind every lyric & performance (check out ‘Given Up’ at 2007 AOL sessions & ‘Rolling in the Deep’ at 2011 iTunes Festival to see what I mean).
They’re the best band I’ve seen live & I picked this song because they ended the set with this (don’t think I’ve been in a crowd soooooo loud since).
MATT – Feel The Pain – Dinosaur Jr – Alt-rock masterpiece from one of my all time favourite bands.
SCOTT – Metallica – I Disappear – So many to choose from but always like this short (for them) and sweet one!
SAM – Tennessee Whiskey – Chris Stapleton – I just bloody love it! Country music is one of my guilty pleasure. This song is just LUSH.
AGE – Rainy Night in Georgia – Randy Crawford
SOLLY – Cheating – John Newman
ALEX – Twista – Slow Jams or Outkast – Ms Jackson
LINDSAY – There are lots so Michael Jackson – Thriller
