Choosing the Right Materials for Your Custom Packaging

Custom Packaging Materials

Choosing the right material for your packaging is almost as important as the product going inside it….it is the first thing your potential clients see, so it needs to grab their attention and stand out on the shelf (or stall) from your competitors!

As you can imagine there is a huge selection of substrates available to house your products, but which one should you choose.

Here are some things to consider when choosing the right material.

Different Sized Packaging Materials

What is the product that is going into the packaging?

Is the product high or low value, is it light or heavy, is it large or small, do you want it to be as environmentally friendly as possible…all of these factors can determine the best material to use as well as the style of box.

If the product is high value then the packaging needs to portray this by exuding high quality itself, so embellishments like lamination, spot UV and foiling are all great ways of portraying this.

Is your product heavy? If so, heavy then you are going to want to either use a thick fluted board for the material whole box or have a thinner high quality board for the outer with a thick fluted inner to give it more rigidity and support.

Do you want it to be environmentally friendly? All of our material purchases are completely Carbon offset with the Woodland trust, meaning we are carbon neutral on any material we use for your packaging…but if you want to take it a step further there are materials available which are made of recycled content too. Not to mention the 40+ solar panels on our roof that power our production!

Below is a common list of materials we use (please note that the below list is only the tip of the iceberg, we can pretty much source any material that you may require for your project)

Folding Box Board

This is a very common material that you will find on most products out there, it is less than 1mm thick, but has great durability and works for a hug range of products.

E Flute

One of the most common fluted corrugate materials out there, this is generally what your Amazon parcel would arrive in, it is approximately 1.5mm thick and is made up of 2 outer liners with a fluted (wavy) corrugate material sandwiched in-between.

F Flute

This is a great alternative to E Flute as is only 1mm thick, but still has great durability and rigidity and is much better suited to smaller boxes where E Flute is just too bulky.
